Katie, not understanding what Summer felt towards her family, felt even more out of place. Her own mom and step-dad downright detested her, and Katie had never felt love anytime in her life. Not from her family, not from any guys [as if she'd dream of that], not from anyone. She obviously didn't understand why Summer looked about to cry.
"If it makes you feel any better," Katie said hesitantly, "monsters seemed to hate me just as much."

Summer glanced up at her, then said, "No, it's not about that, but thanks for trying." She tried to smile, but was sure she looked like crap. You know what? That was done and gone. Suck it up, loser, she told herself.

Summer sighed. "M-my family. Th-they're gone forever." She sat down. Then it hit her. "Wait a minute," she said, standing up again, getting excited. "I almost forgot! My dad's Hades! He would want to bring his wife back to life! Why didn't I think of that before?" She felt like jumping up and down.

Katie pursed her lips. "It doesn't work that way," she said, just holding herself from adding 'dear'. She had that way of talking to anyone younger than her. "Hades may be the god of the dead, but death has its regulations. You can't bring anyone back from the dead, Summer."

Her eyes didn't lose their excitement. "Maybe not for other people, but he's my dad! Maybe I can..." As she said that, she realized that was impossible and sat back down, feeling defeated.

Fotia squacked in satisfaction that Summer didn't call her an eagle, and Katie laughed, a strange, musical sound because she hadn't before. Ever.

Fotia shifted her weight on Katie's shoulder, and then shot upwards into the air. After circling around Summer, she rocketed upwards again, and then dropped down on Summer's hair. Katie giggled again. "That's a nice look for you," she commented.
