Summer entered the black cabin. It was dark and gloomy inside. Rather than scared, it made her feel safe. Summer felt like she belonged in the dark. Summer chose a bunk and settled down. She looked around.

Katie was still exploring camp, now she stopped at the Hades Cabin, examining the outside, the burning green fire, and wondered if she really wanted to go in. Weren't Hades and Zeus enemies, anyway? Fotia was glaring at the door, but she had to behave because Katie had instructed her to.
Katie took a breath and knocked on the door. "Hello?" she called, wondering if anyone was actually inside. It would make her feel very idiotic if she was talking to an empty cabin.

Summer looked up, surprised. She hadn't expected someone to come into the Hades cabin. She figured that if she wasn't a Hades kid, she probably wouldn't have wanted to have anything to do with this cabin. "Yeah?" Summer said kind of quietly. Stop being so shy! In her mind, she kicked herself. I went over the the door to open it, then realized that there was a button on the wall. Oh, crap. "Wait-don't come in right now!" Summer quickly said, then deactivated the traps. Gosh, Hades kids are evil. "O-okay, now." Summer said, her voice quivering.

Slightly confused, Katie opened the door and stepped into the shaded, gloomy-feeling cabin. She looked around nervously, considering Zeus and Hades didn't mix all that well. "Erm," she said hastilly when she realized that the other girl was looking at her. "I-I was exploring the camp," Katie explained in a soft voice. "I was...poking around the cabins a bit, too." Her voice started fading, and Fotia nibbled her ear, chirruping. Katie regained her voice and continued: "Well...um, hullo," she repeated, feeling stupid. "My-my name is Katie, and this is my owl, Fotia. Her name means fire," she added. Fotia squacked, glaring at Summer but not attacking.

Summer nodded. "I'm Summer. Summer Anderson. I-who's your godly parent?" She wondered.

Fotia squacked louder, trying to get Summer to look at her again. Katie sighed at her eagle's antics, and instead answered Summer's question. "My father is Zeus," she replied in a mutual tone, ignoring Fotia.

She stiffened, then relaxed again. "Right. Well that explains your eagle." Summer tried to sound light and easy, but she was still alert. Attacks can come from unexpected places, her mom had said before she died. And everytime she had gotten close with someone, well, as close as a child of Hades could, they had always turned out to betray her. So much for friends.

Fotia screeched in annoyence. Katie sighed. "Fotia prefers not to be addressed as 'my eagle', for some reason. I told her over and over that is what she is. Of course she's still very stubborn. A bit like me," Katie adds jokingly.
If Katie marveled again at how much she was talking this day, anyone reading her mind would've cried out in exasperation, "I don't care!". But she did. And anyone reading her mind did.
She was also a bit surprised she was making conversation with this Summer girl. Almost everytime she made a friend, they either ended up hating her or ditching her in someway. Being abused by her parents at home also didn't help. Her gaze, now wandering about the cabin, hardened. She never wanted to think about her parents again.

Summer smiled at the comment about Katie's eagle-I mean, Fotia. Then she noticed Katie's glare. "Um, hey, you okay?" she asked hesitantly.

{OOC: Warning. Cursing.}
Lost in thought...no idea how true that is.
Katie was cooking dinner, the day after her siteenth birthday. Of course her mom and step-dad didn't care. They told her, "Since it's your damned birthday, you'd better work harder." And the rule hadn't dropped yet, apparently.
David Reed, Katie's step-dad, screeched, "Is the damn soup ready yet?"
In a nervous tone, Katie called back, "No, but it's almost done."
A pause. David comes storming into the kitchen, and grabs Katie but her shirt collar. He was a buff man and easily lifted the teenage girl off her feet. His breath stank of rotten eggs and drugs. "Listen to me, darling. When I say I want my damned food fast, I mean you'd better work your pretty little ass off and get me some food fast!" David threw Katie down, disgusted.
Katie waited until David stormed back to the sofa to watch football and get drunk before stirring the soup on the stove and silently wishing it would hurry up and finish cooking so she could go to her room and kill herself already.
Boom! The wall exploded and five dogs the size of a car broke in, howling. Katie went on defense, recognizing the monsters. Hellhounds.
One leapt at Katie's terrified step-dad, only giving him time to curse {"What the hell? Katie, you little bitch is this one of those fucking monsters again-"} before killing him quickly and cleanly.
Katie's mom stormed down the stairs, drunk. "Did you finish David's godsdamned soup?" were her last words. Another hellhound leapt at Katie's mom and killed her.
Katie pulled her sword out of her belt. Lightning fried two of the hellhounds, leaving three more, saliva dripping from their mouths, frothing, and their red eyes burning with hatred. Katie glared at them. "Bring it on," she said cooly. One attacked and Katie swung her sword, cutting it open in midair. The others attacked from either side.
When Katie whipped around to deal with the one on her left, the hellhound gave her a few good-sized gashes on her back. Katie killed one and then lightning fried the other.
Katie looked at the mangled bodies of her mom and step-dad, her lip curling. Serves you right... she thought. Then she fell unconsious.
Katie snapped out of her thoughts, and realized Summer was looking at her expectantly. She must've asked a question. Blushing, Katie stammered, "Oh, um, I'm sorry. What did you say?"

"A-are you okay?" Summer asked, slightly worried. She didn't want her first-and only, well, if you don't count the eagle-friend to have a problem.

Katie's cheeks turned even more red when she realized that she'd blanked out completely. "It's n-nothing," she stuttered, her embarrassment coming back. "I was just...remembering something," she muttered, her voice getting soft again so Fotia had to peck her ear.

Summer nodded. She was curious, but didn't want to push her new friend.

Katie, nervous, blurted out the first topic that came to her mind. "So, what was life like for you before coming to Camp Half-Blood?"

Summer was a bit shocked. Actually, take out the 'a bit'. "W-well, um...i-it was..." Summer burst out crying, and now she was shocked at herself. Damn it, Summer! Why are you so lame! Argh! Stop crying! Her thoughts only made her cry harder.
